Blue Light Glasses for Night Shift Workers: An Honest Guide
The short answer: orange-lens glasses can take the glare off bright screens and lights during a night shift and remove nearly all blue light from what you see. There is not enough evidence to promise they will improve your sleep afterwards. Never wear them to drive home: tinted orange lenses make blue traffic signals too dim to see safely.
What orange lenses do on a night shift
- Filter blue light: ours let through 1.01% across 380–500 nm (lab-tested).
- Cut glare and reflections from monitors, control-room screens and overhead LEDs, thanks to a nine-layer anti-reflective coating.
- Stay comfortable for a full shift: the frame weighs 19 g and the TR90 flexes rather than pinching.
What they do not do
They will not reset your body clock, and they are not a treatment for shift-work sleep problems. If your sleep is suffering, the NHS and your GP are the right place to start. Light is only one part of the problem. Meal timing, a dark bedroom and a consistent sleep window matter at least as much.
When people wear them
- Late in the shift, at a screen, when bright white light feels harsh.
- On the way home, as a passenger only. If you drive, take them off.
- At home before sleep, if you scroll your phone in bed after a shift.
Safety first: driving
Our lens measures 0.34 for blue signal light recognition, and road use requires 0.6 or above. This is not a technicality. Do not drive in orange or red lenses, day or night.
Frequently asked questions
Do blue light glasses help night shift workers sleep?
The research is limited and mixed. A 2023 Cochrane review found the evidence on sleep too uncertain to draw conclusions. Try them and judge for yourself. We give you 30 days to return them.
Can I wear them over contact lenses or with a mask and visor?
Over contact lenses, yes: they are non-prescription. Under safety equipment, it depends on the fit. They are not safety-rated eyewear.
Which frame is best for long shifts?
The lightest-feeling fit is usually a square or round frame that matches your face width. All our frames are 19 g. See the range.
