5 Signs You Have Digital Eye Strain (and How to Fix It)

If your eyes feel tired, dry or achy after a day at the screen, you're not imagining it. Digital eye strain (also called computer vision syndrome) affects most people who spend hours on monitors, phones and consoles. The good news: once you know the signs, it's usually easy to fix. Here are five of the most common symptoms — and exactly what to do about each one.

1. Tired, heavy or aching eyes

A dull ache around the eyes by mid-afternoon is the classic sign. It happens because your eye muscles stay locked at one focal distance for hours. Fix it: follow the 20-20-20 rule — every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet (about 6 metres) away for 20 seconds to let those muscles relax.

2. Dry, gritty or watery eyes

We blink up to 60% less when staring at screens, so the tear film dries out — which can paradoxically trigger watery, irritated eyes. Fix it: blink consciously, keep a glass of water nearby, and consider lubricating eye drops if a room is very dry or air-conditioned.

3. Headaches that build through the day

Glare, harsh blue light and constant refocusing add up to tension headaches, usually across the forehead or temples. Fix it: reduce screen glare, lower your monitor brightness to match the room, and wear blue light glasses during long sessions to cut the high-energy light that fuels the strain.

4. Blurred vision or trouble refocusing

If your vision goes briefly fuzzy when you look up from the screen, your eyes are struggling to switch focus. Fix it: position your monitor about an arm's length away with the top of the screen at or just below eye level, so your eyes work less to stay focused.

5. Trouble sleeping after evening screen time

Blue light in the evening suppresses melatonin, the hormone that tells your body it's time to sleep — so late gaming or scrolling can leave you wired. Fix it: dim your screens at night, switch on night mode, and wear amber-tinted blue light glasses for those after-dark sessions.

The easy all-in-one fix

Most of these symptoms share two root causes: too much blue light and too much glare. A good pair of gaming glasses tackles both at once. Our amber-lens Ember gaming glasses are built for exactly this — long, late sessions without the headache and the 2am wired feeling. Want a different frame or a lighter tint? Pair the right eyewear with the simple habits above, and digital eye strain stops being part of your day.
